The Times group launched Filmfare Awards in 1954 to honour both artists and technical professions in Bollywood. Along with the National Film Awards, the Filmfare is one of India’s oldest award ceremonies dedicated to Hindi Cinema. Initially referred to as ‘The Clare Awards’, the filmfare uses a dual voting system that involves the public and a panel of experts in selecting the winning nominations. The 59-year-old tradition has been aptly dubbed the ‘Oscar of India’.

The ‘Black Lady’ is one of the most coveted awards among Bollywood glitterati. Stars like SRK and Senior Bachchan, are proud owners of more than one Film fare statue. As 0f 2013, there are 31 official award categories, exclusive of the Critics awards. The record for most awards for a film is held by Sanjay Leela Bansali’s epic masterpiece – Black, which starred Rani Mukherjee in one of her career best roles.

Apart from Bollywood’s much awaited award declarations, Film fare has grown into an entertainment extravaganza over the years. From Shahrukh Khan and Salman to Ranbir and Imran, many have put up their best foot forward as hosts at the annual award ceremony. Complete with filmy masala and colourful sets, the event is not something to be missed.

In January 2013, the 58the Filmfare awards honored the best of Hindi Cinema from 2012. The event was held at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai, and was co-hosted by SRK and Saif Ali Khan for the 6th time. All the black ladies featured gold-platen to celebrate the 100 years of Filmfare. Ranbir starer Barfi sweeped away the major lot of awards and bagged the ‘Best film’ too. The event was telecasted on Sony entertainment Television, as it has been since 2000.

The 59th Idea Filmfare Awards is slated to be held on January 24th, 2014 at its familiar home – Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai. The theme for this year is a light-hearted attempt at ‘Bollywood of the future’. Keeping up with the futuristic theme, the black ladies have been digitally sculpted too! Priyanka Chopra and RanbirKapoor will host the night of Bollywood entertainment and talent.
