Delving into the origins of the latest trends of blouse designs, I had to stop to think of the origins of this humble attire.

While the sari dates back to the Indus Valley civilization in the 2800-1800 B.C., when it was worn as a loosely draped long piece of cloth to cover the lower part of the body and a scarf like ‘blouse’ tied across the upper part, some would probably credit the evolution of the modern day sari blouse to the Elizabethan chemise. The designs and avatars of the blouse design evolved with the now familiar style evolving around the 10th century A.D.

Whatever the origins of the blouse designs, the latest trends are limited only by one’s imagination.

One such is the “collared neck blouse”, which to me seems an adaption of the regal high neck saree blouse worn by the royalty of yore.

So what really is the Collared Neck Blouse Design statement?

Tracing the ‘collar’ to 1300 A.D., according to the Oxford English Dictionary, it is believed that this is a derivative from the ruffle of the medieval chemise through the Elizabethan version – the ruff. Usually associated with men’s shirts, the collar has made the progression to the ever evolving blouse, to make a unique style statement. Whether teamed with long sleeves or heavy embroidery or even the sassy backless versions, this unique trend of ‘collar blouse design’ is fast climbing the glam quotient of the young Indian lady.

Something about this design takes one back to renaissance literature from Bengal when the ‘high class ladies’ experimented with collars and sleeve designs for teaming with their sarees. They had access to the best of brocades and silks and modelled their blouse designs from the men’s shirt collars as an attribute of modesty yet feminine grace. Back then of course these collared blouse designs were longer, more like short jackets, covering the entire back and mid-riff. All covered and yet it exemplified grace. The height of fashion in those days would probably depend on the embroidery or the jewellery that helped accessorise these designs.

Today, the length of these blouse designs have shortened and the more often than not the high backs that were synonymous with collared saree blouse designs sometimes gives way to stunning backless beauties. And more often than not, the heavy embroidery on the collars ensure that not much jewellery is required to complete the look. If less is more, then the current trends for the blouse with the collar neck, is the epitome of style with just the right touch of class.

No matter, how the designers or you decide to tweak the humble collared blouse, it still is one of the most feminine, graceful and svelte piece attire that goes into an Indian woman’s wardrobe.

Choosing Collared Blouse Design

The art of choosing the collared blouse design to suit you

It is believed that the collared blouse is best shown off with shapely shoulders and a toned back. All in all, it accentuates the slim figure, no matter saree. That is mainly so, because the collar draws attention to the neck and shoulders and shows off the shapely figure at its best. And yet, it is best used also to give the illusion of height, depending on the style you may choose.

So which of these would you go for?
