One of the most prestigious awards of Bollywood, International Indian Film Academy Awards or IIFA, instituted to honor excellence in art and technicalities has been a super-duper hit since it was started in the year 2000. The first IIFA awards were held at the Millennium Dome in London, United Kingdom. Since then IIFA has been organized at various locations around the world signifying the success of Bollywood. The event is a three day extravaganza with series of activities relating to the Indian Film Industry.
Star of the millennium – Amitabh Bachchan had been the Brand Ambassador for IIFA till 2010. In its tenth year IIFA introduced five special awards like Star of the decade (male and female), Movie of the decade, Music of the decade, and Director of the decade.
IIFA awards are often termed as the Bollywood Oscars, mainly due to their international appeal, high standards set by the jury to select the award winners and the foreign locales where the award ceremony is held annually. IIFA is one of the most widely watched events in the world with a viewer ship of more than 800 million.
Last year’s (2013) IIFA awards, which celebrated 100 years of cinema was a smash hit and took place at the gambling heaven of China called Macau. Apart from the Bollywood glitterati, the event was thronged by many Hollywood personalities. Prominent amongst these was the actions star Jean Claude Van Damme.
The 2014 IIFA awards is scheduled to be held from April 24 to 26 at the Tampa Bay, United States of America. The online sale of tickets has started from January 14 and is available at www.ticketmaster.com. The event is conceptualized and produced by Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and is being supported by key members of the Indian Film Industry. The organizers feel that the tickets for IIFA 2014 event are fast selling out compared to the previous years. The lead sponsors are TATA Motors, Videocon d2h, the Green Globe Foundation, You Tube, Twitter amongst others.
Although the official IIFA website will unveil the nominees in Feb 2014, the probable nominees for Best Actor will be Farhan Akhtar (Bhag Milkha Bhag), Ranbir Kapoor (Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani), Ranveer Singh (Goliyon ki Rasleela- Ramleela), Hrithik Roshan (Krishh 3) and Sharukh Khan (Chennai Express). The probable nominees for Best Actress will be Deepika Padukone (Chennai Express and Goliyon ki Rasleela- Ramleela), Parineeti Chopra (Shudh Desi Romance), Shraddha Kapoor (Aashiqui- 2) and Sonakshi Sinha (Lootera).
