Banarasi sarees take their name from Banaras or Varanasi – a city that has been producing some of India’s premium textiles for centuries. Much sought after for the finely woven silk adorned with delicate zari and intricate embroidery, Banarasi sarees are an inevitable part of Indian bridal wear. These sarees are considered much more than just a piece of cloth and are even passed down as family heirlooms!
Traditionally, Banarasi sarees are hand loom products. Saree making is a cottage industry for about 12 lakh people from the region around Varanasi. A single saree could be woven in 15 days to a month’s time – depending upon the intricacy of the design and embroidery. The most exquisite among them could take up to 6 months to be completed.
The finely woven silk is decorated with Mughal inspired floral motifs, detailed figures, metallic visual effects, jal and mina work. The intricate gold or silver engravings make these sarees considerably heavy. Jallar – a string of upright leaves on the outer edge of the border is a distinctive motif used on Banarasi sarees.
Today, Banarasi sarees are available in four different varieties of fabric – Katan (Pure silk), Kora (Organza with zari and silk), Georgette and Shattir. There are a variety of designs too – Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue and Butidar.
Apart from sarees, Banarasi silk has adapted to the modern times by foraying into lehengas, dresses and even home décor. However, they are primarily worn as elegant ethnic wear at auspicious occasions like weddings. They exude opulence and give the wearer a royal elegance. Teamed with traditional Indian jewellery, Banarasi sarees can easily cut out the completion from contemporary designs. To suit the tastes of modern Indian women; the designs, patterns and fabrics used in these sarees have also undergone a makeover. So, no matter how traditional or contemporary your style is, Banarasi sarees are an excellent option to glam up your special occasion.
