
The epitome of beauty and grace – Sharmila Tagore was born to Hindu Bengali Gaganendranath Tagore and Assamese mother Ira Baruah. Born into an affluent family, Sharmila got the best of education and the best of culture to live into. After completing her education she got her first break with Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film ‘Apur Sansar’. Sharmila went on to do many films with Satyajit Ray till she got her first break in Hindi films in 1964 with Shakti Samanta’s ‘Kashmir ki kali’.

At the peak of her career, Sharmila Tagore married the Nawab of Pataudi and the captain of Indian Cricket Team- Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi at a Nikaah ceremony in 1969. She converted to Islam and re-christened herself as Ayesha Sultana. Together, they had three children – Saif Ali Khan, Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan.

Sharmila Tagore brought a new fashion sense to Bollywood. Her beehive hairstyle almost became a rage in the 70’s. It was unparalleled feline femininity which Sharmila oozed in her characters.
