Sound of Music
Starring: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood, Charmian Carr among others.
Plot: The movie is set in Austria in the 1930s and revolves around a young woman, Maria, trying and failing to be a nun in a convent and a Navy Captain and widower Georg Von Trapp, looking for a governess for his seven mischievous children. Maria gets the job and is met with hostility initially. The story is about their personal conflicts that soon become overshadowed by a war between Austria and Germany.
Gone with the Wind
Starring: Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel among others.
Famous line from the film: “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn”.
Plot: The movie is based on the novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and narrates the story of a young spoilt woman, Scarlett O’Hara and her journey before, during and after the Civil War. It takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and sequences that transform the young girl into a woman.
Forrest Gump
Starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright Penn, Gary Sinise, Sally Field among others.
Plot: A movie based on the novel Forrest Gump by Winston Groom recounts the life and love of the main character (whom the movie is named after). Forrest has an IQ below average, goes through life creating history, influencing culture and society and is not even aware of it. All this and how he gets the love of his life, is what the movie is based on.
The Godfather Series
Starring: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton, Richard S. Castellano and Robert Duvall, among many others.
An adaptation of the book by Mario Puzo, The Godfather is about Vito Corleone, the ageing don (head) of the Corleone Mafia Family and his son Michael, who returns from the war and wants nothing to do with the mafia. Meanwhile the Don turns down an offer in a drug deal only to realize how expensive it turns out for his entire family.
Lord of the Rings
Starring: Ian McKellen, Peter McKenzie, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Ian Holm, Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd among others.
Plot: Based on the book by JRR Tolkien, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is about an ancient ring belonging to the dark Lord Sauron, which was lost and is now in the hands of a Hobbit named Frodo. The task in hand is to destroy the ring to end the Dark Lord’s reign and Frodo must make a journey to the Cracks of Doom through mountains, forests, rivers and plains to achieve this end. The trilogy is about the journey and trials faced.
Star Wars
Famous line from the film: “May the Force be with you”.
Plot: Created by George Lucas, Star Wars has six episodes and has become a cult. The story takes place in a fictional galaxy depicting different species of alien creatures who are humanoid, robots and others. The movies take you through the journeys, wars and fight between good versus evil.
An Affair to Remember
Starring: Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr among others.
Plot: The movie revolves around playboy Nicky Ferrante and nightclub singer Terry McKay, who have an affair while on a cruise from Europe to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, they make a pact to reunite atop the Empire State Building after six months. However, an unfortunate accident keeps Terry from keeping her promise and Nicky fears that she does not love him anymore and has moved on. Whether he discovers the truth behind her absence and reunites with her is what forms the crux of the film.
Casablanca
Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid
Famous line from the film: “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship".
Plot: Now a classic, the movie is about a bitter and cynical Rick Blaine, who runs a café in Casablanca during World War II and gets two letters of transit into his possession. These letters give the bearer permission to travel across Europe, Portugal and on to the New World making them priceless to stranded refugees in Casablanca. Czech Resistance leader, Victor Laszlo and his wife Ilsa Lund, Rick’s ex-lover, arrive at Casablanca and need the letters to get out of the country. Whether Rick’s bitterness towards Ilsa, for leaving him without an explanation, will get in the way of Victor’s freedom forms the rest of the story.
The Departed
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen among others
Plot: Two young officers from Massachusetts State Police Academy pursue opposite sides of the law. William Costigan gets a job to go undercover by his superiors Dignam and Oliver Queenan. His aim is to join the Irish mobster Frank Costello, to get enough evidence in order to arrest him. Meanwhile Colin Sullivan is Costello’s protégé and mole working in the Massachusetts State Police. Both Costigan and Sullivan get caught up in their double lives, becoming obsessed with finding the other mole, as do Costello and Queenan, the heads of each side.
A Beautiful Mind
Starring: Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg and Josh Lucas among others
Plot: A true story about the genius mathematician, John Forbes Nash, who went from a rising career to a painful and harrowing journey with schizophrenia. After many years of struggling, he triumphed and finally received the Nobel Prize.
